The fortification in Komárno
The fortress in Komárno is the biggest bastion fortification in the Middle Europe. People built it and used it for the protection from Turks. The fortification managed to resist practically to all of the attacks of Turks, but the strong earthquake in the 17th century damaged it to such a degree, that it lost its strategic importance. The ruins of this fortification system are a national cultural monument today and together with the Hungarian part of the fortification have applied to be inscribed in the World's Cultural Heritage UNESCO.
